I live in the west valley of Los Angeles a one hour drive to several CA State parks. A few include Leo Carillo, Mugu, and and Malibu Creek all within 30 minutes from my home. Here is why I like staying at these places.
1. There are no soccor fields. Just nature. My family hikes, explores, climbs rocks, and spends time together.
2. Even within LA county you feel like you travelled hundreds of miles to escape LA.
3. There are no hookups or fancy facilities. This ensures that many of these state parks don't become RV parking lots like Carpenteria.
4. Many have unique and protected habitats.
5. The park rangers are strict. I go to these places to get away from the city. I don't want to hear A holes partying all night like I hear every time we go to Lake Casitas. Why on earth does a family need to bring a 55 inch LED tv and set it up outside their RV and play video games all night when 50 yards away there is an amazing ocean and tide pool to explore??? Just stay home!!!
I have a feeling (or a wish) that many of the state parks (all of the ones I mentioned above) will not be affected because many are protected ecosystems and habitats. I suspect that the state parks the article was refering to are not the ones we are worried about. Well, I hope anyway.
That said, some of the above state parks have just begun adding electric/water and RV parking pads to a number of sites. The construction is scheduled for the next several months.
Unfortunate that we keep paving paradise to put up a parking lot.
