Whats wrong with California State Parks

In todays Los Angeles Times there was a column regarding the results of a study of what is wrong with the CA St. Pks. The gist of the study is that there are no facilities for the young family and the parks are generally far away from urban areas with no public transportation going to them. Among the improvements "needed" are socer fields. There is nothing about camping or RVing and nothing about the use of RVers for volunteers at the Parks. When Mitchel Caverns was shuttered and subsequently vandalized, I wrote and suggested that RVers be used in the Park to report in real time anyone entering the park. No responce of course.

Maybe it is time for the RVers here to address the issue and encourage improvements needed to the campgrounds and the use of Camp Hosts. I know they have been used before and are probably being used today, but, we need to make our presence felt. The link to the Director of Parks is; www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=843

  • I just went to the CA state parks website. Right on the top of the page is the mission:
"Our Mission. To provide for the health, inspiration and education of the people of California by helping to preserve the state's extraordinary biological diversity, protecting its most valued natural and cultural resources, and creating opportunities for high-quality outdoor recreation."

Clearly the parks were established where there are unique natural resources. Now someone wants to plow areas in the park under to level them, plant non-native turf, and have people come to play soccer? I think they are seriously confusing the "high quality outdoor recreation" part of the mission with organized outdoor sports. There are many places to create a soccer field. We shouldn't be doing it in places set aside because of their natural beauty and habitat.
  • Are you sure they arent confusing local city parks? None of those complaints make any sense
  • And the CA parks should have wifi, shopping malls and star bucks. O wait that would be home. Probley a good place for the author if this article to stay.

Just shows ta' go ya'. The above would be a recommendation to me!
  • The CA state parks I've stayed in are mostly terrible, some nothing more than a wide spot in the road. But I think San Clemente State Beach is by far the best.

Geez. They've completely missed the point. Lackwits.
  • Lack of $$$$ is the root of, " Whats wrong with California State Parks."

California should take a page from what Oregon has done with their state parks...first rate and second to none.
