There is a local ATM that is notorious for eating cards. Once it eats one it can't have any other cards put in it. It just shuts down. The bank can't get it open. They have to call the ATM place 100's of miles away and if it's a weekend everybody is out of luck until Monday.
I know this because a person I know works for a big corporation gets paid by plastic and this particular bank is the only one in her town that will take the card. Once she went to the bank to get some cash on payday and when she left the bank she forgot her card in the machine for a few minutes. Then it shut down and not only could she not get her card back the whole machine shut down and nobody else in town could cash there paycheck until Monday. Boy, was her name mud for awhile.
