Where is a good hiding place for money, passports, etc. in the RV?
I see your 'screen name' is LuckyUs. If that's so, why do you have to hide it? You seem to be lucky so no one is going to take it. :)
As full-timers we had no need to hide money either. We each kept $100 or less on ourselves and it lasted for many months. We always use a credit card for everything and pay it off completely each month - no interest, so it's just like using cash. Our credit card also gives us cash back for using it which is a free gift. It's so easy not to have to bother with cash. Even McDonalds takes credit cards.
As far as a 'fireproof' safe, they aren't - really. Friends were involved in a fire and their safe was in the bedroom. It was supposed to be fireproof but RV fires get very hot. They had nothing but ashes left.
We just kept a 'to go' case behind the chair by the front door with our passport, etc. It was easy to grab to take with us if needed. I guess we never worried about theft. Really, how many folks that you know have been robbed in their RV? We also boondocked way out in the middle of nowhere. Never had any cause for concern. - WalabyExplorer IIGenerally speaking, I keep virtually no cash, preferring credit card or debit card. If I do carry cash, I keep it with me at all times. I have a friend, we call him "George", that helps protect my cash. So far, he's been able to accompany me on all my trips. There will be some he won't be able to travel on, so I will have to be even more vigilant. But, I never, leave cash in my trailer, and I never, leave George alone in the trailer. He is either allowed to be with me, or stays home.
Mike - LuckeyUsExplorerWe charge almost everything, debit cards are a big no-no, & we don't carry more money than we can afford to lose, but we don't want to make it easy for a thief to find. I expected some funny responses, and these are hysterical, thanks!
P.S. Been lucky in life & love & now wanderlust, but our money is hard earned. - Happy_ProspectoExplorerJust a couple of hidey places I have seen are under the bottom drawer is usually a goodly amount of space to "hide" things and if you pull out the top drawer and look at the bottom side of the cabinet top, it is a good place to Velcro stuff there also.
Good Luck----The Information is out there, all you have to do is let it in. - Bears_DenExplorerIf I told you, then it wouldn't be a hiding place anymore. Really, I use a debit card and charge cards when I travel. Besides I usually don't have any because I'm too busy paying those that don't work but still want the nice stuff that I work for. Sorry if I offended anyone but I've never been known to be politically correct.
- VeebyesExplorer III spread mine around. Mostly I hide it in places like Lowes, Walmart, various markets & fuel stations all over.
- YWORRYDOGExplorerI made a small opening in the bench seat plywood. Back behind where the drawer stops was a spot to install a small locking safe box on the floor. You have to remove the cushion and then open the wood door that I made then get a flash light and you will see the locked safe box fastened to the floor. Thought that may keep things safe if there is an accident also.
- DSDP_DonExplorerOn my previous coach, I bolted a small Sentry safe 10" x 8" x 4" to a sturdy non removable shelf. I through bolted it with large washes and carriage bolts. It could only be unbolted form inside the safe. I placed it far enough back in a cabinet so that no one could pry on it. It was difficult to get to, which made it hard to get open. We kept our passports, cash and extra set of keys.
When we go to places like Quartzsite, you'll need cash if you want to wander the flea markets and buy stuff. - CavemanCharlieExplorer IIII didn't read all 6 pages of this tread.
I don't often camp where I have to worry about hiding money. But, if I did I would pull up the insole of my shoe and put some under there. That is what I do when I go to concerts / Air Shows etc. This is where in those cases I hide my only credit card too.
Don't know about passports. I may visit Canada this year and if I do it would be the first time I've left the country. I would probably leave it hidden in my pickup truck. With the truck I have now it has a console with a cup holder built in. If you pry on it with a screw driver the cup holder will pop up out of place. Then there is plenty of room underneath of it to hide things.
I do carry some cash. I forgot the PIN number to my credit card years ago. I write checks out to places that still take them. I know,, I know,,, someone is going to tell me checks are not secure. I asked my local banker about that and he said he couldn't remember the last time they had a case of check fraud. Debit card fraud they have all the time though. He told me to keep writing checks as long as I can find places that will take them.
Someone mentioned buying a 5 dollar hamburger with a credit card. Some of the local fast food places will not take credit cards. To big of a hassle for them. Obviously the major chains often will. The local Subway Sandwich shop will not though, surprisingly enough. - FunnyCamperExplorer IIin my drawers, the ones I am wearing :) :) :)
funny thread!
