Public water system requirements. Much of the well water in the west fails one or more of the standards. Remediation is usually simple, a filter, a pressure tank, new piping etc. However that costs money, requires service and regular compliance testing. Not really feasible in remote areas. Ever since common sense was replaced by lawyers, politicians and bureaucrats things are very marginally safer and a whole lot more expensive.
