Where to put da dogs??

Have a odd question that we did not think about when we purchased out truck and 5th wheel.

Truck seats 5, we have 2 large doodles (90 - 100#) and not sure where to put dogs when truck is full.

Was thinking of building a dog container in the bed of the truck but has anyone else had this issue and what is a good solution?

Truck: 2008 F-350
Trailer: 2012 Sandpiper 365SAQ

  • I always travel with multiple dogs. They used to ride in the back of the PU with a canopy. Now I am softer and let our 3 dogs ride in the cab of the truck. It is much easier on them especially in the heat.
  • Sorry, but I would not put my dog(s) in the bed of a pickup.. open to weather elements. Puppers in fifth-wheel not an option with heat even if stabilization of kennels could be done. Dogs loose in fifth-wheel? No way. I was following a trailer in a nearby town the other day, they took a right turn and the entry door flew open.

My dog has the whole back seat of truck, built up so he can look out the window or lie down. On the floorboard, up to the seat level, I have "stuff" stored.

Rearrange stuff or board then looks like only 2 options to me.

    Kennel?

Agreed. We board ours at the vet when we are unable to take them.
  • Actually if the OP has a long bed truck a kennel up right behind the cab could work. Most people claim 6 inches clearence between the bed rails and fiver. So adding even 4 inches to the bed height he could get 2 feet of height. That seems short, but depending on the dogs it could work.
  • If the truck is full of people, and there is no way to share space, then a private kennel or pet sitter is the only answer. Even with an 8' bed, there is very little, if no, room for "humane" crates/kennels for such large dogs. Long trips back there will be subject to high heat in the sun or lack of shelter from the elements. Even if you paid thousands of dollars to re-engineer the suspension of the fifth to smooth out the "earthquake", you would still be faced with the problem of baking them inside.
  • The kennels we have are to big and 5th wheel would hit kennels in a turn
