Which hitch? Sway control? Brake controller?

2005 Nissan Armada
2006 Shamrock 26RS: 6440 GVWR, 27'
Experienced drivers, but novices when it comes to towing.

Do I need sway control? I assume yes. Which type? Cams are superior performance to friction but they are also a lot more expensive. I'd rather not spend extra money on unnecessary sway control, but neither do I want to cheap out and end up with an unsafe condition. I have five very important lives depending on a safe setup.

What are favorite brands of WDH and sway controllers? Get a hitch that comes with sway control, or separate components? Are there any features to look out for? They all look the same to me, excepting weight ratings and price tags. Trunnion bars vs round?

I also need a brake controller. These have 987654984 different features and a huge price range. What am I looking for here?

Price is definitely a factor in these selections and at the same time it's not a factor at all. Our pockets are not bottomless but we will spend whatever amount is necessary to be safe, or not tow at all.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and putting up with my noob questions.

  • Prodigy brake controller is the best IMO. As for sway I use friction and it's great. I ran w/o any for awhile with a similar setup to yours and it wasn't terrible. I just had to keep my finger on the trailer brake constantly to straighten things out when getting passed by a big rig. For WD I use an Equalizer and am very happy with it.

Basically, any WDH and anti-sway is 95% better than none. I wouldn't get too caught up in which brand/style. Read some reviews and and poke around a bit (as you're doing) and make a decision.

The Armada is a capable TV (I use to have a Titan and LOVED it). The weak link on your setup is likely the tires on the Armada. Throw some higher rated tires and airbags for the rear end and you're looking super nice.
  • a quick search here, will show that the most recommended WDH's are the Equal-i-zer and the Reese Dual-Cam. both have built-in sway control and with a SUV, you're going to need a better sway control with a 27'+ TT.
a search will also show that any of the tow Prodigys, P2 or P3, are the most recommended and the best for the price.

these are probably recommended in about every 5 threads in this forum.

Getting initial set up can be expensive...but don't scrimp on the safety items...ie -hitch, brakes, tires..etc.
