As Kesuke Miyagi (Mr. Miyagi in Karate Kid(s) would say, the best defense is to not be there.
I did work in both crash testing and crash studies. Yes, I also believe that a standard pickup might do best for occupant survival, but there is still the problem of where a trailer may take you when things go wrong. There is no testing done on that line. There is only limited testing done on anything that is not a "Passenger Car". If you knew how much that testing cost, you would know why it will never happen with low volume vehicles.
If you avoid the drive time crazies, you will do better from the start. The problem we have all the time is that we will set ourselves in a safe situation only to have some AH in a 4-wheel plug the safety zone. (It is a real shame that common sense has become a rare commodity.)
The other truism is that most accidents happen within 50 miles of home. Does that mean that you should drive like you stole it for the first 50 miles so you can relax later? No, but it does mean that you can't relax because you are on familiar roads.
And I did have lots of pictures of the all to common stick and staple RVs that were transformed into a small pile of debris.
