are you talking about having to be in SD every xxx years to renew your driver's license? and can't do it by mail?

The information applies to Florida, but I believe it is now in effect nationwide:
We just went through this in Florida. Since 2010, Florida allows only one on line renewal.
After that, you have to go into the license office in person and supply ORIGINAL Social Security Card, ORIGINAL or certified copy of Birth Certificate, and two pieces of proof of residence. (We used our insurance policies with our mail forwarding address)
Gathering the forms was the hard part. The actual "in office" experience was quick, friendly and efficient and only took about 20 minutes.
They told us that this was required only once, as they scanned our forms into a data base.
