Which State to pick for residence

My wife and I are thinking of hitting the road in our MH soon and the question has come up of State Residence. We live in CA now and its a bit expensive, I know there are a number of items to consider in choosing a state, such as State income tax, vehicle registration fees, health care, etc. We are considering Washington, Texas or Nevada. Do mail services serve as a home address?

The first tier was simple, no state income tax. Any comments on the other issues...Registration fees and Obama care? What am I not thinking of? thank you in advance.

There is currently a thread on the escapees forum regarding possible new regulations that will require you to be in state for annual inspection "prior" to being able to renew your annual sticker. I think I would wait to see what that outcome is before using TX.

That is in place for new registrations. I hope it doesn't mean existing ones as well, because inspections are annual, but registrations can be for multiple years (I like three year increments.)

  • I wouldn't do TX myself as they have periodic inspection requirements. yes I know yadda, yadda, yadda only applies if you come back into the state.

  • State requirements for 'residency'........TX not a problem (or SD or FL) as those states are RV friendly and easy to become & maintain residency.

Some states are easy to establish residency but have limits/restrictions on maintaining residency......such as time out of state

Yes mail forwarding services can serve as your 'home address' BUT they have to be recognized by the state as a 'physical' address and also many institutes will not recognize some as a 'real' address. Insurance companies and such.

That is why most FT RVrs use SD, TX or FL as a 'domicile' state as the mail forwarding services have been proven to be legally recognized.

Then there is the issue of Obamacare.......depending our your medical needs/coverage requirements....coverage may only be provided within state, except for emergency care. SD & FL do not have multi-state coverage plans currently.
  • TX! Escapee Club. Your mail service will serve as your home address. We do know folks that prefer S. Dakota. Not sure why.
