My Uncle Mark was a great Desert Rat and Rockhound and we as kids spent many a weekend camping in the So Cal deserts in our parents small trailers they hauled with STATION WAGONS out into so called 4 wheel drive areas. He had a great sluice box too.
Thanks for your comments!
As a side note, a lot of field rock and fossil hunting is not in desert areas. During many of our RV trips we collect in beautiful green countrysides, including deep wooded areas. If possible and appropriate we often drycamp close to the areas where we collect, which can turn out to be very interesting places to camp.
I would like to see a permanent forum topic area of what kind of rigs RV owners use and how they use them for rock and fossil hunting. We don't tow, so we have to take our small Class C right out into the areas where we explore and collect. Of course not towing a 4X4 sometimes limits us, but there still are a lot of places directly accessible in an RV. While we're out in collecting areas we of course hike, watch the birds and nature in general - plus take pictures, BBQ, and sometimes even fish if there is water nearby.
