DOT code 5009, means that tire was almost five years old, at the the far end of, or past, its life expectancy, and traveling at 70 mph, above the 65mph ST tires are rated for, probably caused overheating which didn't help either. Glad you were able to complete your trip without further incident. Thanks for sharing and the heads up.
Can you point me in a direction where a manufacture or tire retailer states that the tire life is 4.5 years? Everything that I have found states 7 - 10 years (although I do replace at 5).
My local retailer American Tire/Discount Tire, indicated that trailer tires should be replaced between 3-5 years depending on conditions. Our previous tires were about 4 years old when we replaced them due to sidewall cracks, and from what I can tell, other people on these forums also experience similar life span with their ST tires.
You're probably right about the 7-10 years on car and LT tires I suppose, although I usually change those sooner due to just wear.
