Whooping Cough

I'm hoping that there is a Doctor in the RV:)

Just a question, and not looking for diagnosis or anything like that.
Recently, one of the schools that I drove a school bus for had a student that has Whooping Cough. The school (probably citing HIPAA rules) won't even say which bus this child was on, so all of the drivers and parents pretty much have to assume that all the students may have been exposed.

My question...my grandson (who lives with us) has been coughing the past few days. It would have been at least 2 hours between when I was with the students, and when I was with my grandson.....could I have brought the W.C. home with me. I have no signs of the illness, and I had the vaccine when I had my last Tetanus shot. Is this something that could be carried on my hands or something?

I've asked my daughter to call the Pediatrician's nurse, but I'm away at work (on the tugboat) and I don't think she has.

Thanks for any assistance.....just looking for some peace of mind, no matter which way the answer goes.
  • Has he been vaccinated? On a personal note, I get really irritated when I hear of this old disease reappearing and being caused by vaccine paranoia raised by actresses who pretend to be doctors.
  • If you're current on the vaccine, and your grandson is current on the vaccine . . . then I think the odds of you having transmitted it to him are slim to none.
  • He is current on his normal vaccines, but I'm not sure if that is one that would be in the "batch" that children 3 and under would have? Not sure when they would get Tetanus (which has the Whooping Cough vaccine in it, right?).
Thanks 'gramma, that was an interesting site.
I'm thinking that MJ just has a cough....and of course, it's the season, but when we heard about the W.C. at the school, we were concerned.

    Thanks again:)
  • I think you'd easily recognize a 'whoop' in the sound of the cough. There may be an example on a medical site or youtube.
  • Whopping Cough vaccine is the P in the vaccines get in their initial ones (usually under 3). P is Pertussis. There has been a re-emergence of the disease, either from unvaccinated folks or mutation of the disease (like flu does). Recently the recommendations are that adults have the Pertussis booster as part of a Tetanus booster, and is you are around babies, you may speed up your booster schedule to protect the baby until he gets full protection by immunization. I learned this recently as my DD was expecting. I did a lot of research, as I am allergic to the Tetanus vaccine, and was trying to find Pertussis without Tetanus.
  • Please excuse the rant: If I see another pin head refuse vaccinations for her children because "I'm tired of the government telling me what to do" I'm gonna scream! This was on a Tyler TX news station this past week.

Working as a school nurse the year my youngest was in first grade brought me up close and personal with the totally clueless and foolish and law breaking record tampering fools who refused vaccinations on no reasonable grounds whatsoever. It was just a means to be obstinate, subjecting their own children to real harm in the process.

You've had good advice PapPappy, and thank goodness you and yours appear to be covered by vaccinations.
