I have had two diesel trucks. I didn't find either one to be complicated or temperamental. One was a 2002 F250 with the 7.3 PSD and the other, and my favorite, is the 2016 Ram Cummins TD pictured in my signature. Both trucks ran flawlessly for thousands of trouble free miles and gave excellent towing performance.
The cost of an oil change was higher ($55-$90) because of the amount of oil in the crankcase (16 quarts if I recall correctly). Other then that, the diesels didn't cost anymore to maintain than my previous gas engines. Of course they do cost more up front though but that is a slight disadvantage, in my opinion, compared to the improved towing performance that they give.
