Why a roof inspection is important

Yesterday I completed my annual roof cleaning and inspection. I found two black slightly humped spots on the roof. They looked like the typical mold/mildew spots that roofs get during the year that usually just wash off. These were odd as they were slightly raised. I scraped at them with my fingernail and they just popped off, leaving a small divit in the roof material. Closer inspection showed that they were probably hot embers from a campfire that had melted into the roof. Now the roof material is slightly thinner in the two spots. A small square of eternabond will fix it, but it is still leakproof at this point. Another lesson is to keep your campfire small and away from the camper if possible. It really would be nice if the manufactures could actually come up with a more durable/leakproof/check twice a year proof roofing material. I would gladly pay a bit extra.

  • Roof inspections are so important. The roof is the only thing keeping your RV from getting water logged. It is very expensive to repair water damage and it could be so sever by the time you notice it inside that the repair will exceed the cost of the RV itself.

On a side note, I noticed some campers this past weekend with a fire so large that the flames appeared to be 6 feet high. I think that is a bit dangerous considering it was between 2 RV sites that are only about 25 feet apart. Keep the fires under control as to not damage yours or anothers RV.
  • Not sure how it would hold up against hot embers, but I am following the new release of Rhino Eco Coat RV Roof coating. It came out last year and I would be interested in seeing how people like it after a few years. I am crossing my fingers that it lasts like they say it will... and that a dealer will be coming onboard on the East Coast soon.
  • I agree with your comments wholeheartedly!
Good man keeping a close eye on your coach.
