There's definitely an element of randomness. Maybe a friend invites you to visit, so you plan the route that includes their place, plus a bunch of bucket list spots on the way.
My google map has thousands of stars, so wherever I end up I know what I want to see that is near there, and I can plan a connect-the-stars route.
