There are those who say WD is not needed on a 1 ton. I deffer. I use WD all the time with my diesel dually 1 ton to ensure the weight IS distributed evenly on both axles. My hitch weight might not be all that much, but putting those bars on does make it ride much nicer on all road conditions.
You actually make the case for
not using a WD hitch. Since your heavy diesel engine adds so much more weight to the front axle that to evenly distribute weight towing, adding weight to the rear axle via the trailer tongue will do that. WD puts weight on the front axle that needs no more weight. Try towing without WD and you might find that it actually tows better since the axles have better distributed weights. I have, it does. I tend to agree that WD is OK for station wagons and half ton trucks that have little payload capacity but for a truck with 4000 or so pounds payload what is 1000 pounds tongue weight? It is not even half the payload available so why distribute part of that to the front axle?
It is extremely doubtful you will lighten the front axle of a diesel one ton with a relatively light TT tongue weight enough to have a problem; but you will balance the empty truck's front/rear axle bias. Try it, you might be surprised how much
better it handles.
