Consider two different trailers:
Trailer A: Dry weight of 4500lbs, GVWR of 7500lbs. Cargo capacity of 3000lbs.
Trailer B: Dry weight of 4500lbs, GVWR of 5500lbs. Cargo capacity of 1000lbs.
Almost no one tows a 'dry' weight trailer, but there are differences
One has larger GAWR
One has larger capacity tires
assumptions
One has larger volume
One is longer
Ask, do they both weigh the same after the optional equipment is
installed?
Ask if they both have the same tongue weight, even with their 'dry'
weight?
Ask if they both have their liquid tanks located in the same place
in reference to their axle center lines. Ditto heavy stuff like
kitchen/bathroom/etc
Assuming I pack the same people and amount of cargo, and assuming that the same amount of water and propane is being hauled, why would it matter which trailer I towed?
Back to the above...where are those things located in reference to
the trailer axle center line and what will the actual tongue weigh be?
And if they are both weigh the same fully loaded and that is under
the 'real' MTWR, then they are BOTH okay
Maybe the larger one will have more sail area (both frontal and side)
and where that load is on the trailer...will or might have different
tongue weights...that might change whether your lowest class TV is rated
or not rated for that actual tongue weight
The formulas and calculators would have me believe that Trailer B was safe to tow and Trailer A was not. Why?
Don't...why don't you post links to the calculators you used and the
'stuff' you used to plug into those calculators
I don't understand why the potential cargo capacity should factor in when determining how much I can tow. Yet it seems in every thread I read about how much one can tow, GVWR is taken as gospel and dry weight is completely dismissed. And the difference between the two is rarely considered.
None of the 'potential' is referenced, or by me at least. The only time
I reference that total capacity is when the OPs do NOT know which
trailer and/or TV they are going to buy. So, tell them to use the respective
GVWR's to calculate..what else is there?
Dry is worthless and is a pure marketing number...as is the TV curb
What am I missing?
