I would go to SSI.gov and fill out the paperwork for disability. If you have the medical documentation, you can file yourself. My husband went off work last year in July for cancer. He filed for SSDI in July this year. I took copies of the medical paperwork that we had showing dianosis, relapse, treatments, etc to the local office the day after I filed online. The agent at SS said he had never seen such complete documentation and he thought it would be approved with no problem. He called me to say that the approval was the fastest he had ever seen for disability. Took two days. My husband was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer, which is considered a serious illness.
I would try applying for SSDI on your own and if you get turned down, then you can decide what you want to do or if you want to work with an attorney. The attorney will take 25% of whatever backpay amount you are awarded.
