There is an iPhone app called WiFi Finder that does a pretty good job finding available hot spots.
Some public libraries and restaurants (Starbucks) also have free hotspots, sometimes needing a password.
If you use xfinity their open hotspots are starting to show up all over the place, I see them quite often when scanning with the WiFi Ranger.
