Will This Work?

After years of towing small trailers with a strong TV (weight was never a factor) and owning a couple of Class A MHs we have decided to buy a 5th Wheel and P/U truck, but I'm having trouble figuring out all the weight, tow ratios, etc. for the combination I am looking at. Perhaps someone can give me some advice on the following units I am considering and let me know if I am within a reasonable limit.

THE TRUCK: 2001 Ford F-250 4x4 short bed 7.3 diesel w/tow package & slider hitch.

THE 5th WHEEL: 2004 Forest River Cardinal 33'
UVW - 10,500#
GVWR - 14,110#

Considering we will be full-timing, I assume we will pack in what, 2000#? I'm thinking the trailer is too heavy for the truck, but I may be missing something in the equation. Any input provided will be appreciated.
  • Go one size bigger on the truck (F-350) and enjoy.

    Used this combo ( 2004 F-350/==/2003 33CKTS from 10/2003 till 10/2013

    Well I will call it borderline to be nice. The following is not a recommendation just what is currently working well for us.

    Our package is 2001 Ram 2500 5.9 CTD with a 3.55 gear, and a small chip 50hp and 140#.

    The 5er Dry 9,820# with a 12,360# GVWR currently loaded to about 11,000+/-

    No I am not currently overpowered, nor am I under powered. I can keep up with traffic in both the Coast Range and the Cascades.

    DW and I plan on taking this rig into retirement and Full timing.

  • When estimating TV capabilities for a 5vr, I'd add 2500# and 25% pin weight.
    That'll give enough cushion to tow easy.
    For your consideration, 12500# and 3125 pin weight.
    A 3500 is in your future. But look closely at the TV payload if buying older.
  • You really want a 3500SRW minimum. Dually would be a far better choice.
  • Your thoughts are correct. Never helps to be on the borderline of trucks limits.
