Hi all,
Got another spot to report on: Ocracoke island NC. For those not wanting the hustle and bustle of Hatteras, there is good windsurfing to the south on Ocracoke.
First the camping: Ocracoke has a campground run by the parks department. Spots accommodate rigs up to approx 30ft. We are 31' and fit no problem. Campground is primitive--no h2o or electric. Dump station and h20 across the street--very close. Golden-Passport America friendly--$11.50/day. Spots are a bit close together for my liking, but the price is right and the park borders the eastern beach on the Atlantic side. The place was virtually empty in October and the weather was great. Mid to upper 70s during the day, lower 60s at night.
Second the windsurfing; best launch for the Pamlico sound side of the island i found was about 4 miles north of the campground: 1st left approximately 1.5 miles north of the pony pens. Follow the sandy road to where it dead-ends at the sound. After 3 full days of windsurfing I saw only 6 people. Beautiful, quiet, and nice warm shallow water that seemed to go on forever. Good for wind from all directions except dead east. The wind was not overwhelming, but oh my was it steady. Had a blast! Here are a few pics of the trip:
