Holy smokes, Slackercruster. I'm no spring chicken, but I'm thinking about going to Corpus to go windsurfing in a few weeks, and my training regimen has consisted of trying to limit myself to one piece of pie a day while staying in Pie Town, New Mexico.
That's one nice thing about windsurfing except in epic Gorge-like conditions--it's not terribly hard on the body. Take a census of the sailors at a launch, and you'll find a LOT of engineers, who aren't generally known as society's buffest segment. Lots and lots of old people, too--60s is common, 70s is well represented, and some 80s are out there. Bird Island Basin looks like a field trip for the old folks home.
We're in New Mexico right now, and the wind is absolutely howling, every day. There's a reservoir in the middle of the state, Elephant Butte, where people sail. There are several campgrounds at the lake, but they're not close enough to the water to launch from. That's the local scoop, anyway--we haven't been yet because if we're going to Corpus, then we're not terribly excited about sailing gusty winds in a deep reservoir right this minute. However, being in Corpus after May 1 is a chancy proposition because that's right about when it starts getting too hot to survive without air conditioning.
We're planning to be in the general vicinity of Elephant Butte and if the stars align, we'll take a stab at sailing there are report back. FWIW, people drive from Albuquerque to sail there all the time.
Unfortunately, I didn't take the JAG Corps position way back when--if only they had told me I could be windsurfing all winter in Key West after I retired...
