WINDY in Laughlin!!!

Arrived Tuesday in Laughlin after a couple of fun days at Quartzite and checked into the Riverside RV Park for a week ($139). Rode my Harley up to Vegas on Wednesday morning for 2 days of fun with my bil/sil and our daughter at the Flamingo. The ride up was cold, think 34-40 degrees with 72 mph wind chill... but we layered up and it wasn't a huge problem.

Friday morning we left Vegas at 8 hoping to get back to Laughlin before the predicted high winds hit... didn't make it. The first 85 miles were ok as the wind, blowing 35-45, was dead behind us as we raced south on 95 but it was even colder (solid ice on all of the ponds and pudddles), 32-35 and now with 75 mph wind chill as we raced south.

Made the turn due east off of 93 for the last 20 miles up and over the pass and back down to Laughlin. Now the wind is coming from the north at 35-45 and gusting 50 as I struggled to keep the bike in our lane. Got back to the coach at 10 and hunkered down.

Nearly 24 hours later it is still howling and predicted to last all day. The rig is parked facing west up on the third level of the park and is rocking like we are driving down a bad road. The furnace (35',000 BTU's... thank you Nexus!), is getting a work out but we are fine, watching movies and laying low.

Still have to reload the bike on my Kendon trailer later for our early Sunday morning departure when it will probably still be blowing but hopefully not as bad. Just another great trip with a tad more adventure then we signed on for, oh well...

  • I am 7 miles west of Yuma and today is the 8th day in a row with bad wind! Yesterday was 30-50mph.
  • We are across the river from you. Been here since Jan 1. I have not enjoyed the weather.
  • It's been very windy more often than not since we got here November 27th.
Wave at us when you leave!
    Safe travels back home
  • HA! Sometimes I think I will just take my hurricanes thankyou. Been windy here in Bermuda for past few days. Down here in the dense humid sea level air 40mph is like 60mph in a dry high elevation. Waiting for it to ease so the grass can be cut. No dust to get into everything though.
  • Riding a motorcycle when it's that cold can be done. First off, buy heated gear and heated grips. We use Gerbing brand jacket liners (about 200 bucks) and socks (about 80). I also install Gerbing Thermostats on our bikes (about 100 bucks). The Gerbing products work so well you have to be able to control the heat. I've installed Oxford brand grips (80 bucks) on a few bikes and they work great. Also look at Oxford muffs. You have to get your wallet out but it's worth ever cent! I rode my Goldwing 250 miles on a 27 degree day. It's like riding in a hot tub. I ride with the jacket liner close to my body and insulate it with a jacket on top that blocks the wind and holds the heat in. Once you ride with this stuff you'll never ride without it again. I'm no Harley expect but I would think a Harley would make enough electricity to power it all. Research it. If you need more power you can change the headlight and other bulbs to LED. I had to do that on my KLR650. My real concern is the crosswinds. I wouldn't ride in that. You could get blown into a car. Also I would worry about the wind blowing parts off a Harley ;) PS: Sorry about that joke ;)
  • Plan on being there in a month+. Hopefully the Santa Anna winds will be all done by then. So have you biked out to Oatman yet?

FWIW, all said and done, deep south TX has been pretty nice this winter (knock on wood.) If it keeps up that'll makes two in a row. :E
  • Both wind and cold sucks to ride in. Makes for a longer trip. At least you have a nice place to stay at the end and don't have to deal with staying in a tent lol.
