After all the work and effort in getting my 5th wheel back up to snuff I'm not sure I want to leave it outside all winter here in SW PA. I replaced a section of the sidewall, new cooling unit on frig, new awning, and a new vinyl plank floor.
I found two maybe three underground storage facilities that cost wise seem reasonable but never having stored in a limestone mine before was wondering what to be concerned about. The temperature stays around 52 degrees all year round. There appears that there is more humidity in the mine. Don't know about rodents or anything else.
Has anyone stored their RV in an underground limestone mine before? What advice can you provide?
Here are the three places:
Toy's Underground Storage
Brady's Bend Underground Storage
Wampum Underground Warehouse
Has anyone ever used on of these places? Were you happy or not? Would you do it again?
If anyone knows of any other protected storage around the Pittsburgh PA area please let me know.
Thanks!
Dave
Meh..
I can literally spit on one of those under ground storage spaces you mentioned.. Just plain not worth it.
Yes, I realize that folks insist constant temp and humidity of underground is better than leaving it out in the open and they are willing to pony up the rent for it.
There really is no "evidence" that storing it under ground is better and in some respects the 50%-60% humidity is a bad thing.. That IS right humidity for MOLD although the temps are a bit low for mold but I would not think it is a good idea.
Several downsides, when it is in storage, you have no access to it so if you decided to take a trip you will have a limited chance to get it out.
It is out of your sight and hands.. You are depending on the facilities "security" to insure the safety of your item.. not ALL security is secure..
That high humidity may not be all that good for fabrics/carpet/wood items..
Personally, if you have the space/place I would suggest spending some money on a permanent open "carport" type structure.. That structure will protect the roof of your trailer and you will not have to worry about getting covers on/off.
The carport will allow proper air flow not only under but all over which a cover will not do.
Carport will give you easy access to trailer including the doors..
Carport will support the snow load during winter and in the summer protect the roof from the sun and rain.
Carport in the summer can double as a pretty nice picnic area if you pull the trailer out!
