If you buy a purpose made BBQ brush with brass bristles, this pretty much becomes a non issue. I've been using the same grill brush for many years and there are never any bristles on the grill. Occasionally, I wipe the grill with a towel saturated with olive oil. That would also remove any foreign matter on the grill.
