I've towed 1500 lb rated trailers (with brakes/controller) by 1500 lb rated cars and the results were delightful. As far as effortless handling goes, better than my F250/Airstream, and my current Lazy Daze 24. The trailers may have been a tad over 1500 for that matter. But the whole rig was low profile with inherent good handling in the tow vehicle. OTOH F250 or E450 are not inherently good handling vehicles compared to most passenger cars. The trailers were too small, but I'd hate to think I couldn't have used the best handling RVs I've driven because someone deemed them unsafe.
I personally draw the line in the extreme overloads some do because I think the drivelines are thermally limited, and there can be strength issues. So I'm not willing to go that far..
