When I was a kid (here we go...)
We all carried pocket knives and even played with them in the playground. We could buy cigarettes and smoke them if we wished (my aunt used to send me to the corner market for cigs when I was pretty young, maybe even 7, tried them once and hated them), we roamed free range, if we didn't show up by dark, our parents would be mildly worried, but no big deal. We rode horses all over creation, nobody knew where we were and even had a few wrecks we didn't bother to tell the adults about as we didn't want any freedoms taken away.
We rode dirt bikes all over with no licenses or plates, played cowboys and indians with real bb guns and arrows, though they weren't sharp and we weren't supposed to shoot each other, which we mostly didn't because it hurt, not because our parents said not to. We even got .22 rifles when we were about 12 and knew how to use them, though we never killed anything except old cans.
Try any of that now and see what happens. But I'm a little off topic, though it really all boils down to personal freedoms, doesn't it? I think we should be able to do anything we want as long as it doesn't harm others or the environment or critters. If we want to harm ourselves, well, so be it. Selling this trailer fell, for me, under the topic of potential harm to others, thus the quandary.
In case anyone asks - I'm 65.
