Therein lies the irony. The same parents who roamed free as children raised kids who weren't allowed to. What really changed to cause that? Was it the increased availability of (bad/scary) news?
My theory is that our collective tolerance for pain and suffering has dropped as life itself has gotten easier. We try to do everything to prevent any form of loss, with the larger cost of a loss of freedom and sense of really "living". I see it now that my kids are in elementary school with the policies for everything right down to how to use the "play"ground equipment. I once told the principal I'd be concerned if no students ever needed a band aid.
I'm sure we are safer but I'm not sure we're really better off or happier in the end. (I mean overall. Obviously there are plenty of specific examples where people a better off by preventing an injury).
