If there was a European version it would be rated 2500 pounds or more, and suddenly it would be ok by a lot more people no doubt. Amazing the power of marketing.
There are several hitches available rated 3,500 pounds custom made for the Element and they bolt on, so the only issue would be the drive-line reliably and it sounds like they are not going up Pikes peak on any regular basis so ... and Honda's are made tough.
