I'm a believer in technology. Technology which includes chemistry has greatly improved both the oils we use as well as the devices we put them in. I will trust the engine electronics to tell me when it's time to change the oil in my cars. My next choice is to read the owners manual and follow their directions.
I firmly believe the 3,000 mile interval is very much old school but if it makes you sleep better at night then go for it. Never having an engine failure due to oil does not validate that changing it at 3,000 miles is useful. Just preventative maintenance.
