I have camped in a van hippy-style, a pop-up, a travel trailer and a motorhome. All felt kind of cramped except for the pop-up. Critters have learned to bust the zipper on tents in some parks and the tents are a mess to deal with wet. A bear bit the corner of the pop-up next to us in Yellowstone thus we went hardside with the trailer. Thought the motorhome would be great (had wife, dog and two cats then) but something would break every trip. Now I have a Chevy passenger van with a sofa/bed that I camped in once this year (I'm a widower). Works out OK with a porta-potty and a camp stove but I'd like A/C, a generator and a little more room to haul stuff. So my next project is to take a 6x12 cargo trailer and fix it up as a minimal camper. Thus I'm off the ground, have a decent mattress, packing up is quick, cost is low and it'll be easy to sell down the line if necessary. I might even toss in a motorcycle for roaming once I reach my camping spot.
Look for a Jumping-Jack camper. It's basically a cargo trailer/canvas tent combo and you can load gear on top. Jumping-Jack
Several other makes are on the market too.
