Patching is the normal method of repair. But I have never had a plug fail either. A couple years ago I had a 1/4" metal rod about 6" long puncture one of my almost new tires thru the tread. They had to put a plug in to fill the hole. Still on the ground and still holding air fine after several thousand miles.
