If you have to buy the dolly it might be cheaper to just purchase the equipment necessary to tow 4 down. We started towing a Buick on a dolly. Later we purchased an 04 Jeep Wrangler. The initial intent was to tow it on the dolly. However after reading the owners manual I discovered it had to be towed 4 down.

The cost of the towbar, base plates, and braking system were almost identical to the cost of the dolly. We've towed the Jeep (04 Wrangler Sport, 4wd, with auto trans) 4 down over 100,000 miles without any problems.

The question is towing the wrangler on a dolly. Everybody knows it can be towed four down.

We flat tow our 2011 Wrangler auto... blue ox towbar, brakemaster system, transfercase in neutral, tranny in park... off we go.... have towed from upstate NY to Myrtle Beach, then on to Fla. and back, no issues.....

My brother-in-law pulls his 4 down it's an automatic. Been doing that since 2004.

And like the others have explained, this isn't limited to just the Wrangler. Most 4x4's can't be towed on a dolly for the same reason. That is unless you do things like Mowermech said, but who wants to mess with dropping a drive shaft for a toad?

The transfer case needs to see the front and rear drive shafts moving at the same speed. On a dolly the front drive shaft will not spin and can damage the tcase. Now that's what I have heard, however companies came out with unlocking hubs for the wrangler and I never heard of anyone blowing up their tcase. I think the communication issues is that you need to have the front driveshaft spinning at the same speed as the rear so that you can shift into 4x4 high while moving at a moderate speed.

If you get the wrangler you will love not having to deal with a tow dolly so I would look at getting a tow bar. I have used the cheap version but the adjustable one are easier but way more money. Tow brackets are easy to install and I used diodes for the tail lights.

The problem on jeep is the rear hubs move the front don't when on a dolly ... Evidently they need to move together or is messes with the transfer case .. At least that's what I was told

Actually, you CAN tow a Jeep on a dolly. All you have to do is get under it and remove the rear drive shaft. The same applies to a 4X2 Jeep.
If you are lucky enough to find an older Jeep that has had the Warn hub kit installed on the rear axle, you can just unlock the rear hubs.
Towing a 4X4 Jeep 4 down is so easy. I used an inexpensive Reese fixed-arm tow bar on Jeeps for years. You can find them at Walmart for less than $200!
