Wyoming/Colorado weather in Oct.

Planning on leaving southern B.C./Okanagan (towing a 5er with 4X4) in mid October. Down through Washington across Idaho & Montana into Wyoming & down through Colorado & New Mexico until we drop anchor in Yuma, Az. We want to add a couple more decals to our map. What kind of weather can we expect (normally) through Wyoming & Colorado ?
  • Thanks all for the info. After all I read it looks like we'll head west and do the Oregon coast. At least we know what to expect there having grown up in the Pacific Northwest. From there who knows until we finally get to Yuma. Don't care much for California (55 mph max while towing) etc. Cheers, Marty
  • I've been wakeboarding on the Western Slope in Oct and been Sno machining in 4' of powder on Halloween at Vail Pass.
Just take your trip and watch the forecast. If shatty, sit it out a day or 2 or take a lower route.
  • This may help. http://www.weatherbase.com/. It gives the average weather patterns for wherever you go.
  • I wouldn't hesitate to go through both states in mid-October. IF a winter storm hits, worst case scenario - you stay in an RV Park for one or two days. Most likely is that you'll have beautiful fall type weather, especially on the Interstates and main highways.

Live a little and get your new decals. We had truck chains for our Alaska Highway November/December trips and didn't use them. Never had chains for the trailer (20' cargo).

Don't buy chains for an "if" when you can take a day delay.

Oh and we have running water in our homes in Wyoming now! ;)
  • Never been through either and would like to see them and add 2 more decals to our map. And I don't want to ever say "I wish we had" again. So they are not all high passes, there are lower routes ?
  • Are some routes better than others heading East into Wyoming from mid/south Montana ? Then down through Colorado & N.M. ? Any suggestions ?

I'm presuming you mean somewhere east of Yellowstone, and heading down into Wyoming from south central Montana. If that's the case, there are really limited options, depending on your preference, time frame and what you want to see/do.

You could simply take I-90 from Montana to Buffalo WY, and pick up I-25 there, and use that as your southbound route to where you want to go in Colorado/New Mexico.

Or you could take US 310 from Montana into Wyoming and go down through Worland, Thermopolis, Riverton and Lander via US 16/20/26 (sometimes combo on those roads), and then pick up US 287 in Lander and take that south to I-90 to Laramie, and then continue on US 287 south through Fort Collins CO and pick up I-25 there or in Loveland CO.

If you're talking about coming out of Yellowstone/Grand Teton area, there's a variety of routes that could work -- US 26/US 287 or US 189/191 out of Jackson down to I-90 in the Rock Springs area.

I'm sure some of the fine Wyoming folks here will chime in with preferred routes, these are just some of the options available to you. Again, depends on what you want to see/do.
