Actually, it's not what you can tow, it's what you can haul. Half tons and SUVs run into this all day long on a smaller scale. The truck runs out of GVWR/RAWR for tongue/pin weight long before you get to the max tow rating.
FYI, I have the same issue on the Suburban, rear axle is rated at 6084, which is coincidentally 2x the rating of the stock 245 tires at 3042 lbs each. I went to 8" wide rims and 265/75-16E tires which are rated at 3415 lbs each, giving me an extra 746 lbs of capacity on the rear axle. My 14-bolt 10.5" is not as stout as the AAM in the pickups but is still rated at 10k lbs in other applications.
