Re-reading some of the posts, I noticed that Ductape seems to think the stories being told are "rare".
I have over a million miles in trucks, thousands pulling "recreational", and I do not believe accidents are all that "rare". I have seen a lot of scraped, bruised and mangled RVer's. In some of those cases, I am sure there was more than just bruised egos.
I do not have the statistical data that has been asked for, but I can NOT imagine that driving/towing an RV would make you MORE safe. In fact, I would say your odds go up, simply because it is harder for the RVer to avoid the idiots. Anything that is harder to "avoid" a crash with, makes you more likely to be involved in a crash.
Statistically speaking...airplane travel is very safe when you take flights divided by accidents (I still don't want to be in a plane crash). Tractor-trailers are involved in accidents on a daily basis, but again....miles divided by accidents....safer than driving in a car.
MY POINT to the OP---- is RVing down the open road more dangerous??? YES--IMHO. So what? If RVing is something you want to enjoy, then enjoy it. Driving bigger, heavier, wider, longer, vehicles is more dangerous...Be diligent while towing (as you should be in all of life's adventures) and HAVE FUN.
