Each year it seems like "something" happens.
Year 1 - a) Severe thunderstorm with tornado in Ohio on maiden voyage, pulled over and stopped while storm blew by. We kept our seat belts on and prepared for the van & trailer to be blown over into the ditch next to us. Were glad when a few big rigs stopped next to us and buffeted the winds. b) tire on van blew on I-95. Controlled stop, waited for AAA, got changed and went on way;
Year 2 - Radiator blew on last leg home; AAA to the rescue again
Year 3 - getting off an exit following a motorcycle (thought I was giving enough room) but motorcycle came to an abrupt stop because exit was ripped up by construction, signage wasn't good, causing me to slam on my brakes, everything stopped but boy did it get my heart going! Stayed really far back after that! You never know what can happen.
I was taking the DW to the airport the other day and there were crazy drivers everywhere. Reminded me that when I was teaching my 3 kids how to drive I didn't have to come up with crazy situations because something always seemed to happen that you needed to be prepared for.
Slow and easy and alert at all times is my mantra to keep myself focussed, and I try to remember if I'm not doing any of these I need to pull over and relax, rest, refocus!! A strong dose of humility helps, which is one of the reasons I love this site. Everyone is willing to share and that helps keep us all safe!
