I think people who don't camp a lot often don't realise how far sound carries when there are not solid, insulated, wood or brick walls around them. Altitude, or alcohol, make this worse.
So true. "Normal" tones and levels can easily carry much further than intended. No one expects anyone to whisper, but what we used to tell our son was to use his "library voice". You'll never be able to cut voice noise out completely but it can easily be minimized.
