They wear out - I've had two replaced under warranty over the years. I just assumed they were the least dependable of torque wrenches... all the mechanics I know use dial type and/or digital.
You need to be careful using beam-style. The indicator rod can touch the bar and give a false reading if you aren't holding the wrench flat. The indicator rod can easily be knocked out of "zero", just by the way you pick up the wrench if you aren't careful.
