An aware owner knows from experience what appliances run on one leg of 240 and which run on the other leg. By simply switching on loads (like different AC units) a basic and fundamental pre-check can be made. Remember you're working with 2 independent 120 volt circuits L1, L2, and LO wise. Simple algebraic analysis.
