Yipers!
I had a pair of Maples in my back yard. Great shade trees. Sorry to hear you lost one. I lost 3 ash trees, several years back, due to those Ash borers. Way back, when I first bought the place, a storm came thru, and bent the one (much bigger) maple right over and onto my roof (low bungalow). Then it just went back to normal. Other folks weren't so lucky. There were huge branches all over the place, just up the street.
I loved sitting under those trees in the summer. A few summers back I was off work, and got to sit on the patio and watch four families of Blue Jays raise their young. It was interesting to learn the different sounds they make. I figured about 6 to 7 individual sounds, for when they're hungry, and such.
I set out a small dish of peanuts in the shell, right next to me on the table, and one jay would come down (like two feet from me) to grab one. It would look at me, then at the peanuts, then back at me, and then grab a peanut. But what I found interesting, if not amusing, is, they actually pick up a peanut, shake it a few times, and then try another. They may do this 3 or 4 times until they're satisfied it's a good one. lol. Then it would teach its young to break it open by setting it in a small indent in one of the branches, and show it how to break it open. Of course, the peanut would fall onto the patio, right in front of me, the older jay would dive bomb straight down and grab it, and try it again. Fun to watch.
