12v portable winch problem

I have a 12v portable winch that worked just fine last Fall. It is always stored inside, Now when I hook it to a battery the 2 relays just click, the motor won't run. When hooked directly to the battery the motor runs. I bypassed the thermal cutout switch, replaced both relays, bypassed the switch on the remote control, tried 3 different batteries. Still won't run. Does anyone have a suggestion?

  • Keep poking around. Eventually you will find 12v on one side of something and 0v on the other. Replace, repair, clean or tighten the issue.

And of course I have to ask the obvious... do you have the polarity correct?
  • mthockey dad, I just found the problem in the socket where the remote control plugs in. Half of one contact was smashed down bridging it to another contact. I straightened it out and everything is fine.

Thanks to everyone for your comments.
  • RJsfishin, I tried 3 batteries because it appears to be a low voltage problem. Even though a battery might give good voltage readings that doesn't mean it's ok. I'm using a Fluke vom to test.

Brian, I've checked the resistance through the remote switch and bypassed the remote switch.

Thanks to both of you for your reply.
  • I've had the contactors inside the chintzy remote control handle not work. I can't remember how I fixed it, or what the problem was, but it involved taking the control apart several times and much frustration.

  • If it runs directly from battery, you've almost eliminated the motor being the problem. I wonder why then you tried 3 different batteries. And you have nearly eliminated everything else.
If what you say is accurate, it is near impossible.
The problem could be found in a minute or less w/ a 12v test lite.
Do you own one ? If not, get one !
