If you have two 6 volt batteries and either dies, your battery bank is useless. If you have two 12 volt batteries and one dies, you might be able to remove the dead one and get by with limited power. Either way, batteries of the same age typically age out similar to each other and need to be replaced as a set. With quality batteries of either voltage that is not likely for quite a few years of service.
