A condenser (capacitor) (small silver container) of that age could be your problem.
Almost all point/capacitor ignition systems use a .23mf condenser. So any condenser from a point ignition system that you can fit in will work. Surely you have an old condenser from a 1949 chevy on the shelf? GRIN.
