Be careful!
The disconnected shift lever can fool the neutral safety switch into thinking the transmission is in Park or Neutral when it is actually engaged in gear. I would not get under a vehicle with these symptoms unless the battery ground cable was safely removed, and doing that only when no one is near the driver's seat and ignition switch.
