Cummins just sent me this after asking them the same question (these generators have a separate battery? Where would it be?:
The generator has it's own starting battery(s), separate from the vehicle. If the generator batteries are not charged, are not charging, or are just old\dead, then running the vehicle engine to get the generator to start, is needed to start the generator.
When I get calls of a generator not starting or it's clicking when trying to start, that can indicate a dead battery. Running the vehicle engine can charge the battery to get the generator going or the generator works off the vehicle battery\alternator to get running.
