Not meant to be an insult; just fact based on the evidence provided here.
The typical Onan onboard has a "prime" switch, often the same one as OFF. Are you using that for a full 30 seconds BEFORE trying to start the generator ?
Are you sure that major loads are turned OFF while starting ?
Hard starting could also be a sign of needing some carb cleaner in the gas; Berrymans B12 Chemtool is probably the best.
It also could be a sign of the choke not working right.
Is there a good reason why you are NOT going to visit a Cummins/Onan dealer to get this fixed ???
The noise could be a loose exhaust manifold or burned out muffler.
If there is an exhaust leak, you could have a carbon monoxide hazzard to your health.
