The main impediment on these is that they contain about 2 lbs of ice - mine does enough for about 3 big cups... You're not going to fill a cooler (very easily) using these.

Paid for one of those over $200 about 10 years ago. Perfect ice maker for party (used it at home as well) but you need to learn how that thing works. It takes water from big tank, freeze the ice rings on cooling pins and drops into the tray above water tank. When you fill up 80F water, the rings will melt in the seconds, but next tray of ice rings follow in couple of minutes and slowly whole maker will get cooler and cooler, so at some point the ice rings will stay in the tray for long time before they melt. The ice has 32F temperature all the time, so not the best for coolers, but perfect for drinks. Give it about 2 hr head start and you will like it.

Sure beats a 10-mile drive. Refrigerator/freezer cubes taste yucky for some reason and yes the freezer is surgically clean and odor free. I believe frozen meat give off odors?

Not unusual for ice to pick up flavors from what's stored in there.

I dump the the first two cycles back into the water to Cool it down
Like I said I will then run it long enough to fill two or three one gallon zip lock bags, that's enough for about three days use
Approximately 10# of ice, for iced drinks

And then I got a deal from a friend for $35 for the same unit.
I can crank them both up and realistically get 8 pounds when the bins are full.
It drops ice every 9 minutes. Thats enough to fill coolers when needed.
