How much is/was the refrigerator repairs? How much more are you willing to spend learning about this? Put that all together and that will cost a lot more than hiring someone qualified to do the work without burning down the house. I have spent a lot of money trying to save it, before giving up and hiring a professional. Its cheaper in the long run, and done right.
